The plaque commemorates those who served in the 2nd Australian Infantry Battalion during World War One. The plaque location is indicated by a red poppy in the second image.
The 2nd Infantry Battalion was among the first infantry units raised for the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) during World War One. Like the 1st, 3rd and 4th Infantry Battalions it was recruited from New South Wales and, together with these battalions, formed the 1st Brigade.
The Battalion was raised at Randwick Racecourse in August 1914. Lieutenant Colonel George Braund was the first officer commander and led the battalion on its arrival in Gallipoli on April 25 1915. He was shot nine days later by a sentry guard after he forgot the password. Lieutenant-Colonel Walter Scobie took over and led troops into the Battle of Lone Pine.
