The honour roll commemorates 1592 soldiers who served in World War One.

In October 1915 the Mackay Harbour Board requested that an honour roll be erected in the Town Hall, listing the names of those from Mackay and district who had enlisted in World War One together with photographs of those killed.

The marble honour roll was installed in March 1917, although the inscriptions are incomplete.

Mackay District World War I Honour Roll

This honour roll is reported to represent the names of the persons who enlisted in the Mackay District in World War I.  The honour roll many not be complete in that some names may not have been recorded here which deserve to be.

Whilst the roll reflects the many citizens who enlisted, it is understood that some may not have been subsequently accepted into the armed forces.  Certainly the patriotism and courage of those named on this roll must be commended and admired.
