The monument commemorates those who served in World War One. It was erected in 1922, was originally sited in Herbert Street and was surrounded by an iron fence.
It is a polished granite column and was the second most costly "digger" monument in Queensland. Statistics plaques around the monument inform that total deaths in World War One were 60,278 from total enlistments of 416,809.
His Excellency the Governor Sir Matthew Nathan will arrive in Goondiwindi next Wednesday in order to witness tho solar eclipse on Thursday. He will be accorded a civic reception on Thursday, at 10 o'clock, and at 11.30 he will unveil the soldiers' monument, which cost £1800.
