Hagley War MemorialPrint Page
The monument commemorates those from Hagley and District who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. It lists 8 names.
In spite of the inclement weather on Saturday—rain falling throughout the ceremony—a large number assembled to witness the unveiling of the monument— granite on a cement base—which has been erected by the people of Hagley district to perpetuate the memory of their fallen heroes. The opening speech was delivered by the Warden (Hon. G. Pitt, M.L.C.) who was followed by Rev. T. Woodford (Methodist). The dedication and special prayers for the occasion were in the hands of Rev. W. Hooker (Anglican) and Major Gee, D.S.O., did the unveiling. An apology was read for Rev. H. Culliford.
The school children, with Mr. F. Beveridge as conductor, and with the help of the Westbury Brass Band, rendered suitable locaI items, and after the unveiling several beautiful wreaths were placed on the base by relatives. The following names were on the stone:—V. A. French, E. S. Hope, W. R. Hunter, H. R. Trethewie, J. P. Selby, E. S. Martin, J. H. Hunter, W.G. Heazlewood with the inscription: - "Erected by the people of Hagley district. In memory of the valiant men who gave their lives in the great war, 1914-1918." The monument, which cost £100, reflected credit on the contractor, Mr. Morgan, and on the committee, the members of which worked so hard in obtaining it.
Examiner (Launceston, Tas.), 6 June 1922.
