The obelisk commemorates the 142 men who enlisted from the district for service in World War One, and the22 of them who were died in service or were killed in action.

The Roebourne War Memorial was unveiled on the 13th May 1920 during the visit of the Governor of Western Australia to the town. The Governor took part in the ceremony although the memorial was unveiled by the mother of one of the soldiers who was killed.
