The metal honour roll flanked by marble columns and surmounted by an ornate metal pediment commemorates 258 soldiers who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.
A temporary roll of honour containing the names of 95 men who had fallen in Gallipoli, France, Russia and Egypt was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1917 by the Mayor, Mr S Beston.

Additional names were added to the temporary roll on subsequent ANZAC Days until the end of World War One. In 1920 the existing roll was unveiled in the Town Hall.
