The monument is a representation of a World War One soldier, which has been carved from the stump of a tree which stood in the original Avenue of Honour, which commemorates thirteen local soldiers who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.

Source: MA,SKPThe carved stump on Paynesvilles foreshore was one of the last trees of 13 that were planted on 10 August 1928.
In memory of the 13 local men who lost their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1918.
By 1999 only 1 tree and 1 stump remained.
The Paynesville Stump Project Sub Committee was formed in 1999 and funds were raised to have the stump and the surrounding area turned into a memorial paved garden area.
