Thirroul War MemorialPrint Page
The War Memorial commemorates those who served in World War One. The monument which was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1920 was originally a fountain which is no longer functioning.
It is a statue of a World War One Australian soldier wearing a slouch hat and complete with rifle, on top of a sandstone pedestal. Marble name plaques, and at base, the Australian "Rising Sun" Military Badge in sandstone.
The figure of the soldier was originally white but became discoloured over the years. When the custodians discovered they couldn`t scrub it clean they decided to paint the uniform in the khaki colour used in the desert during World War One.
