The avenue of 52 Flame trees (Brachchiton acerifolius) commemorates those who have served in World War One. The dedication of this Avenue of Honour coincides with the centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 and the conclusion of the First World War.

Five Avenues of Honour were originally planted in the park in 1918 in memory of those who served in World War One. Many of the original plantings were lost and in 1947 the park was reconstructed and plantings recommenced.

First World War `Avenues of Honour`

By November 1918, five avenues of tree had been planted in the park and dedicated to the Australian men who served during the First World War.  Individual name plaques of returned and fallen servicemen were originally placed at the base of the trees, but these have been lost over time.

In the two decades that followed, a series of severe drought periods had impacted the trees in the park and many of the original plantings were unfortunately lost during this time.  Reconstruction of the park began in 1947 and plantings recommenced.

This avenue has been replanted with 52 red flowering Flame trees (Brachchiton acerifolius) to represent the bloodshed on the battlefields.  A Lone Pine (Pinus halepensis) has been planted on the crest of the adjacent hill to honour and remember those soldiers whose resting place remains unknown.  A Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) has been planted at the Wool Street entrance in recognition of families who have lost loved ones in conflict.

The dedication of this Avenue of Honour coincides with the centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 and the conclusion of the First World War.  ANZAC Park serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by all Australians during times of conflict.

The Right Honourable, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Councillor Adrian Schrinner, officially dedicated this avenue on 31 October 2019.
