The Pavement Memorial commemorates the Centenary of Armistice and former students, teachers and staff who served in World War One. 

Funding of $3637 was received in 2018 through the Armistice Centenary Grants Program for the installation of the memorial. 

The University Historical Society in conjunction with the University and interested groups installed a pavement memorial in Whitfeld Court in commemoration of the Centenary of Armistice. Together with a commemorative event on Sunday 11 November 2018, these form part of the UWA Historical Society's focus to honour UWA staff, students and graduates, who served their country in World War One, some never to return. Armistice Day in 1918 marked the cessation of hostilities in World War One.

This initiative of the UWA Historical Society, created an enduring memorial on the UWA Campus and is undertaken along with the update and refurbishment of the University's WWI Honour Board which has now been relocated to the foyer of Winthrop Hall (first floor level). Until the completion of this work, there was no War Memorial on the UWA Campus.

The armistice was signed at Le Francport near Compiègne that ended fighting on land, sea and air in World War One between the Allies and their opponent, Germany.  Also known as the Armistice of Compiègne from the place where it was signed at 5:45 a.m. by the French Marshal Foch, it came into force at 11:00 a.m. Paris time on 11 November 1918 and marked a victory for the Allies and a defeat for Germany, although not formally a surrender.
