THE LONE PINE - GALLIPOLI
Lone Pine or the 400 Plateau was the scene of a major diversionary offensive launched by the Australian Infantry Division on the 6th August 1915. The Turks had cut down all but one of the trees that had clothed the ridge and had used them to cover the trenches. The ridge dominated by the single Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis) became known as Lone Pine. In the three days of fighting the Australians lost more than 2000 men while the Turks losses were estimated at 7000. Seven Victoria Crosses were awarded to Australians as a result of the action that took place there.
THIS TREE ORIGINATES FROM SEEDLINGS GROWN FROM A PINE CONE SENT HOME FROM GALLIPOLI BY LANCE CORPORAL BENJAMIN SMITH OF THE 3rd BATTALION AIF.
IT WAS DEDICATED ON 11th NOVEMBER 2004 TO COMMEMORATE THE BATTLE FOR LONE PINE AND AS A CONSTANT REMINDER OF THE SACRIFICE OF FELLOW AUSTRALIANS IN THE SERVICE OF OUR NATION.
