Gisborne Cemetery World War One MemorialPrint Page 
The life-size statue commemorates soldiers who fought in World War One, including many locals buried at the cemetery and provides a place for many people to reflect on occasions such as ANZAC Day.
The statue was unveiled in 2015 on the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine.

OUR STATUE
Here am I a humble statue,
Made of granite, bronze - and cast,
I stand silent tribute,
To our heroes of the past.
Men and women, bold and brave,
Who answered country`s call.
They went to war in lands unknown,
Prepared to give their all.
Our bloody fields of battle,
Our diggers to their cost,
Forged a lasting legacy,
That never will be lost.
So many rest in foreign soil,
Lie far across the sea.
They made the sacrifice supreme,
So others could be free.
That great spirit of the Anzacs,
Though 100 years have gone,
From now until the end of time,
Forever will live on.
I mark this first centenary,
A place in history`s page,
Our nation stood for all to see,
Australia come of age.
In this quiet peaceful setting,
I stand sold, rigid, steady,
In my slouch hat and my uniform,
With my rifle at the ready.
I'll recall the deeds of long ago
Tell new generations why,
The memory of the Anzacs,
Must never, ever die.
