The oval commemorates those from the District who died in service or were killed in action during World War One.

The gates to the oval were officially unveiled and the sports ground were dedicated on the 21st February 1926.  The gates originally contained a marble plaque of those from the District who died in service or were killed in action. The marble plaque was later removed and placed on the Alstonville War Memorial.
