The monument commemorates servicemen of German descent who died in service or were killed in World War One and World War Two.

The memorial was unveiled in 1930 in memory of the fallen of World War One. In 2002 a plaque was added to the memorial to commemorate the German casualties of World War Two. 

The inscription on the front of the monument, "Dem Cedenken Unserer in Australien Verstorbbenen Landsleute" translates to "In memory of our fallen Australian countrymen".
