St Patrick`s River District Roll of HonourPrint Page
The photographic honour roll commemorates those from the district who served in World War One. It lists 43 names.
St. Patrick's River. There was a large gathering in the local hall on Saturday evening, when a roll of honour, inscribed with the names, and illustrated with the portraits, of all the young men from the district who had gone to the front, was unveiled by Lieut.-Col. R. F. Smith, who said he was proud to have been associated for so many years with a district that had sent out so many young men to do battle for the Empire, and defend our homes. A hearty welcome was given to Privates A. Whitcombe, A. Burns, and S. Valentine, and Gunner Les. Shemp, on their return from the battlefields of Europe, where they have worthily done their part to uphold the reputation of Australian soldiers.
The roll of honour itself is a very fine piece of work, and when exhibited in Launceston attracted very favourable comment. Needless to say, we are very proud of it, and the energy and generosity displayed by Mr. T. Warren and the ladies committee who organised the collection of funds, etc., are highly creditable to them. The result is a memorial of our brave men that is worthy of a position in any public hall. Much discussion has arisen amongst residents as to the best site for the proposed memorial to our fallen soldiers, and it has been decided to hold a plebiscite amongst subscribers to the fund as to whether it shall be placed, as originally intended, at the Patersonia Cemetery, or at Nunamara— at or near the junction of the Patersonia and St. Patricks River roads.
