Georgetown Memorial Bowling ClubPrint Page
The Bowling Club commemorates those who served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
On October 29, the Georgetown War Memorial was declared open by His Excellency the Governor Sir Willoughby Norrie. His Excellency congratulated the district on its choice of memorial, namely, a recreation ground comprising a children's playground, bowling green, croquet green, and lawn tennis courts. On the roll of honor of those who paid the supreme sacrifice are the names of two parishioners of St. Mary's—Lex Noonan and Bob Brogan. At the conclusion of the unveiling ceremony, His Excellency and Lady Norrie, attended by Viscount Althorp, visited the Georgetown Convent and were received by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Other members of the official party making this visit were: the Chairman of the District Council of Georgetown (Mr. Ross Reed) and Mrs. Reed, the Member of Parliament for Rocky River (Mr. J. Lyons) and Mrs. Lyons, the chairman of the Georgetown War Memorial Committee (Mr. Gordon Smallacombe) and Mrs. Smallacombe, and Mesdames G. F. Schwerdt and P. Schwerdt.

Last Saturday afternoon was a red letter day for the district as it was the first occasion that bowls have been played in the town. There was an informal opening when the War Memorial President Mr. G. A. Smallacombe gave the Committee's sanction for practice prior to the official opening. Mr. C. H. Martin as first President responded and then assigned Mr. P. J. Schwerdt the privilege of rolling jack for the first time and himself likewise jack rolling up the first bowls. Three rinks were occupied by 24 players and a very enjoyable practice ensued. Ladies did their part by dispensing a nice afternoon tea. The old experienced players pronounce it a satisfactory green, particularly for a first season.
