The monument was originally erected to commemorate soldiers of Kolan Shire who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. The names of those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two were added at a later date.
The memorial was unveiled by Lieutenant-Colonel Christie on November 6th 1920 and contained the names of one nursing sister and 47 men of the shire who had made the supreme sacrifice. The monument cost £320 and was unveiled free of debt.
