Beenleigh War MemorialPrint Page
The Beenleigh War Memorial consists of the original World War One memorial behind which is a wall commemorating all wars and conflicts. The original memorial is in the centre of a water trough with a large brown "Rising Sun" crowning it.
Originally erected as a World War One memorial by the R.S.S.I.L.A. Beenleigh Sub Branch, the memorial was unveiled by the Lieutenant Governor, Mr William Lennon on the 21st November 1925. On his arrival at the unveiling ceremony, the Lieutenant-Governor had been handed a poem by a local citizen. Mr Frank Walker, in honour of those who had made the supreme sacrifice.
Sleep on! Australia's noble sons, we bow our heads to thee
Who fought and made the sacrifice to make Australia free
With courage never lacking when facing flames of hell —
Peace be unto the ashes of those who nobly fell.
The "Post" (the last) has sounded in honour of the name
Of those who made the sacrifice to seal a nation's fame —
To the youth of Young Australia which is buried o'er the sea
We bow our heads in token of a faithful memory
