Shire of Balmoral War MemorialPrint Page
The monument commemorates those who served in World War One and World War Two. It was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One.
The monument carries the words of a poem written by Colonel John McCrae in 1915, referring to the red poppies of Flanders Fields in Belgium, now used extensively on ANZAC Day wreaths and, in particular, on Remembrance Day.
The monument originally held a captured machine gun on the plinth and the gun disappeared sometime in the 1950s.
An `Australia Remembers` plaque was added in 1995.

Dedication
Shire of Balmoral
The machine gun captured by the 9th Battalion A.I.F. during operations near Merris, Flanders in June 1918.
“ In Flanders Fields “
In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
in Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
in Flanders field.
Colonel McCrae
In honour of the men and women who served Australia in time of conflict during World War II
