Latrobe War MemorialPrint Page
The monument was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One, but now commemorates those who have served in various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It is a white marble statue of a World War One soldier standing at ease on a grey and red granite obelisk on a three-stepped base. The rising sun insignia of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces is placed on all four sides.
There was an excellent attendance of the Latrobe War Memorial Committee at the Council Chambers on Monday evening, the Warden (Cr. A. H. Iles) presiding. Letters from both the State and Commonwealth Departments were read, agreeing to the erection of the memorial on the reserve in front of the public buildings of the town. It was decided to adopt the design and specification of Messrs. W. Train and Co., of Melbourne, the monument to cost £590, and the lettering and inscription approximately £100.
The base will consist of three freestone steps, surmounted by grey granite, and then red Australian granite, the four sides to be polished, and the names, some 270 in number, to be inscribed, the whole to be crowned with a figure of an Australian Digger, to special design, in Australian white marble.
Advocate (Burnie), 30th November 1921.
