The monument was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.
The names of those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two were added at a later date. 36 names are listed.
June 9th was the all important day of Campbell Town carnival week. Although the proceedings were somewhat marred by the rain, which fell continuously, sufficient was present of dignity and picturesqueness to make the day live in the memory of those participating, and to constitute a notable landmark in the history of the district. Interest centred on the official opening of the centenary celebrations proper and the unveiling of the Soldiers' Memorial in the centre of the township.
