The monument commemorates Special Air Service Regiment members who have died in service or been killed in action while serving with the regiment
The memorial includes eighteen soldiers and air crew who died in a mid-air helicopter crash during a training exercise near Townsville in 1996.
On 12 June 1996, Australia's worst military air disaster in peacetime occurred near Townsville, North Queensland. Two Army Blackhawk helicopters collided in mid-air and, as a result, 18 soldiers lost their lives. A further ten soldiers were injured. Fifteen of the dead were members of the Special Air Service Regiment.
