The monument commemorates members of the Order who died in service or were killed in action in World Wars One and Two. No individual names are shown on the memorial. It was originally unveiled by his Excellency the Governor Sir Francis Newdegate.
The International Order of Good Templars was formed in 1851 in America as a temperance and philosophical society. In Western Australia the Order was already established by the 1870s and in 1874 the Reverend William Traylen,Wesleyan Minister of York established a Chapter in Northam with the assistance of George Throssel, a Northam identity.
Perth had Chapters in most suburbs and in January 1878, the Order held what was described as " a monster demonstration" in the Perth Town Hall. The organisation continued to grow with Chapters being established in most country towns. After World War Two membership gradually decreased until, in 1965, the order in Western Australia was wound up and the assets given to the Western Australia Temperance Alliance.
