The stone cenotaph was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. It now contains the names of those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two, and includes a brass plaque, which was formerly located in the post office, erected in 1942 in honour of Jim Gordon VC.
The memorial was unveiled by the Governor, Sir Francis Newdegate on the 17th November 1920.

Note : There has been a proposal to relocate this memorial to Granville Park near the site of the Anzac Centennial Wall of Remembrance.
