The monument commemorates those from the District who served in conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One. The names of those who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two were added in 1954.

Saturday was a memorable day in the history of Saddleworth. On that afternoon the unveiling of the soldiers' memorial took place. The monument has been erected at the junction of the main street with the Burra and Riverton road on a piece of ground presented by Mr. Heaslip, and can be seen for some distance along either road. It was designed and built by Mr. W. J. Neill, of Moonta. The edifice stands about 17 feet high on a foundation of concrete 10 feet square, surrounded by a stone wall 17 feet square.

A figure of an Australian soldier carved in Italian marble surmounts the pedestal.  The pedestal is made of polished Harcourt granite, and has the names of 17 men who made the supreme sacrifice, inscribed on the eastern face. On the northern and southern faces are the names of 50 other volunteers.
