Riverton District Soldiers Memorial Hospital Print Page
The hospital commemorates those from the District who died in service or were killed in action in World Wars One and Two. It was originally built to commemorate those from World War One, and a Nurses Home was erected in 1955 to commemorate those from World War Two.
The ceremony of turning the first sod of the Riverton District Soldiers' Memorial Hospital took plaoe on Tuesday afternoon, in the presence of a large and enthusiastic gathering of the citizens of the town and district. Mr. O. H. Castine (secretary of the hospital committee) explained the object of the gathering, and introduced Mr. McLachlan, M.P., and requested him to ask Mr. Robert J. James (Chairman of the district council), who is also President of the hospital committee to turn the first sod.
Mr. McLachlan referred to the excellent site which had been chosen for the structure. Mr. James pointed out that the building to be erected was to be a 'district' memorial to the fallen soldiers, and for the use of the district, and not Riverton alone. An appeal was made for the whole-hearted support and co-operation of all in the district. The building will be a handsome and commodious structure. Messrs. F. Dutton, Bryant, Limited, of Adelaide, are the contractors.
