The cemetery commemorates all Australian and Allied servicemen and women who served their country in peace and war. An upgrade to the cemetery was commenced in 2017. 

The cemetery contains 22 graves of soldiers and airmen of the Australian Forces. There are seven other war graves throughout the cemetery.

The No 2 Bombing and Air Gunnery School of the Royal Australian Air Force (R.A.A.F.)  was based at Port Pirie during World War Two. Most of the R.A.A.F. casualties buried here died in air training accidents.

By the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Royal Australian Air Force was 154,511 strong, of whom 137,208 were serving in the South West Pacific Region during the war.

The RAAF suffered over 10,200 casualties, including 6,357 killed or missing in action, 160 who died as prisoners of war and 2,800 lost in flying accidents. The majority of air­crew and ground support staff were based and trained in air force establishments spread across Australia. Of these, Port Pirie was the home of No.2 Bombing and Gunnery School; later to be­come No.3 Observers School RAAF.

Port Pirie War Cemetery contains 22 burials of RAAF air­crew, most of whom died in air training accidents.

In Port Pirie General Cemetery are buried three Australian soldiers from the First World War and four from the Second World War.
