Owen War MemorialPrint Page
The War Memorial commemorates those from the district who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two. It was originally erected to commemorate World War One with the names of those from World War Two added at a later date.
A roll of honor in memory of the volunteers from Owen was unveiled on Wednesday by his Excellency the Governor. He was attended by Captain Somerset, and among those present were Messrs. A. W. Robinson., M.P., and J. McLachlan, M.P., and the Hon. W. G. Duncan.
After unveiling the monument his Excellency said it would commemorate the sacrifice made by the men of that district in the common cause of freedom. The parents and relatives of the fallen would know that the memorial would be a tangible object to them, and they knew they had the respect and honor of that neighborhood. He specially referred to Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Richards, to whom he offered sympathy, gratitude, and respect. He hoped that for all time everybody would make it a practice to take notice of that monument. He wondered whether they realised what the men did at the front. Every necessity of life and every luxury the people enjoyed in this country they owed entirely to the soldiers.
