The monument commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
It was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.
The district memorial to fallen soldiers was unveiled on January 6. By 4 o'clock a vast crowd surrounded the monument, which was covered with the Union Jack and the Commonwealth flag. A combined choir from the various churches, with Mrs. Woollacott at the organ, opened the proceedings with the hymn, ''O God our help in ages past." The ceremony of unveiling the memorial was performed by Brigadier-General S. Price-Weir, D.S.O., V.D.
