The gates were originally erected in 1937 to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.

They were redesigned in 2001 and a plaque added to commemorate all who served and those who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War Two, Malaya, Korea, Borneo and Vietnam.
