The monument commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two. It was originally erected to commemorate those from World War One with the names of those from World War Two added at a later date.

An "Australia Remembers" plaque has also been affixed to the monument. Behind the monument is a commemoration wall which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli and contains plaques to theatres of war in which Australia has been involved from 1915 to 1965.

The monument was re-dedicated on the 25th April 2015, to coincide with the centenary of ANZAC.

The monument is a cast bronze statue of a World War One soldier with rifle at the on-guard position, standing on a granite pedestal on a granite plinth and three stepped granite and concrete base. The memorial was unveiled by His Excellency The Governor, Sir Tom Bridges on the 30th March 1924 in front of 1000 people. The tablet bears the names of 37 fallen. The cost of the memorial was £650. A German field gun was presented to the town as a war trophy.
