The monument was originally erected to commemorate Trooper John Hartley Moore who was killed in the South African (Boer) War.  Additional engravings were added to the monument to commemorate those who lost their lives in World War One.

An interesting yet sad function was performed at Lobethal on Monday, 3rd inst., when the fine monument erected to the memory of the late Trooper Hartley Moore, one of the first South Australians killed in the Transvaal War, was unveiled in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and sympathizers from all parts of the district. The obelisk is composed of red granite beautifully polished, and is placed on a particularly well-chosen position near the junction of the three main lines of road.

Trooper Moore was deservedly popular with all who knew him and the funds for the purchase of the memento have been readily subscribed by residents in all parts of the Onkaparinga district, who thus showed their interest in the war and their respect for the deceased and the sorrowing relatives, who have lived for very many years in the locality. The ceremony of unveiling the monument was performed by Mr. R. Caldwell, M.P, who in concluding an excellent speech referred to the cause of the sad performance in the following strain. Should any passing stranger ask why thus we have agreed to raise
this monument in Lobethal. so justly named the ' Vale of Praise' we will reply—

"One left this vale
To struggle in a common cause
And light beneath the nation's flag
For liberty and equal laws.
And he was true, and brave, and young.
And loved by all who knew him well;
But on those fever-hunted plains
At duty's call, our neighbour fell.
He was the first to die of all
Who left this valley for the land
Of war and woe. And now he sleeps —
With many a brother of the band
That bled and battled for their Queen—
On Africa's ensanguined coast.
Till the great Resurrection trump
Shall wake again the silent host.
But not to arms! For strife must cease.
And concord spread from shore to shore ;
But parents, sisters, brothers weep
For him whose earthly course is o'er :
And thus we raise this monument
In memory of Hartley Moore."
