Houghton War MemorialPrint Page
The monument was originally erected to commemorate those from the District who served in World War One. Plaques containing the names of those who served in World War Two were added at a later date.
On Easter Monday the ceremony of unveiling a memorial to soldiers was performed. The progress committee made arrangements. The memorial is composed of granite, the base being of grey Victorian granite and the pedestal of Aberdeen granite. It stands about 10 ft. high, and is of a handsome appearance. On the face is inscribed 'Honor the brave heroes of the Great War, 1914-19— .'' It is proposed to inscribe the names of those who have paid the supreme sacrifice, and on the other side the names of those who return.
There were about 50 names to be placed on the stone of those who enlisted from the district, and other Houghton boys who enlisted from other places. Mr. Maughan (chairman of the progress committee), who presided, stated that the ground upon which the memorial stood was presented to the committee by Mr. E. J. Cummins. Mr. Robert McEwin unveiled the memorial, which was draped by a Union Jack.
