It was unveiled in October 1930 by the Governor, Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven.
Owing to the steady rain on Saturday afternoon, It was decided to postpone the ceremony of unveiling the South Australian railway war memorial, which was to have been performed by his Excellency the Governor (Slr Alexander Hore-Ruthven) at the railway recreation ground, West Park Lands. The proposal to postpone the ceremony was conveyed by the assistant and general traffic manager of the Railways (Mr. B. H. Gilman) to the Governor. He agreed, and his suggestion of Sunday, October 19. at 3 pm., as a suitable time for the ceremony was accepted.

South Australian Railways Memorial
In memory of those who fell
These laid the world away
Poured out the red sweet wine of youth
Gave up the years to be of work and joy and that unhoped serene that men call age.
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
