The monument commemorates those who served in World War One and World War Two. It was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One.

The names of those from World War Two were added at a later date. 

A memorial erected on the front beach, Sorrento, in honour of the men who enlisted from the Sorrento and Portsea district, and in memory of the fallen, will be unveiled by Captain Bruce, M.H.R., on Sunday, December 11, at 3 o'clock.
