Montrose War MemorialPrint Page
The monument commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
It was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One. The names of those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two were added to the memorial and unveiled on ANZAC Day 1947.
An additional plaque has been added to commemorate the men and women of Montrose who served in World War Two.
Montrose Soldiers Memorial.
In this rustical retreat,
Where mountain winds blow fresh and sweet.
A votive monument we raise,
Now and for the After days.
Lest fail we to remember
The hearts that found the ember
Of fire their fathers gave;
Until it spread a pyral wave
About the world till older lands
Warm'd thereat their numbing hands,
And, taking heart where hope seem'd vain,
The Invader swept from land and main!
To them the honor, God the praise
For this votive shaft we raise -
Now and for the After days.
Let us then uncovered stand,
A proud but reverential band,
While the veil about it flung
Is drawn, and hymns of praise are sung.
Let us read with fond acclaim
Every well-beloved name:
Those who regained their native shore,
And those who shall return no more;
Sing honor to them, and heart's praise,
Round the votive shaft we raise,
Now and for the After days.
