The monument commemorates those who served in World War One, World War Two, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  It was originally erected by the residents of Merino and District to commemorate World War One. 

The memorial was unveiled in front of a large crowd by the Governor, Sir Arthur Stanley, KCMG on the 28th December 1918. About 250 people travelled by special train from Casterton to attend the event.
