The monument was originally erected in memory of those from the district who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. The names of those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two were added to the memorial at a later date as well as plaques commemorating later conflicts.
Built after World War One, the monument originally stood on the corner of Whitehorse and Railway Roads. It was moved to Morton Park on 20 April 1969.
It is a grey granite obelisk on a single stepped bluestone base on a concrete platform.
