The hall was erected to commemorate those from the Oberon District who served in World War One and World War Two.
It was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One. The foundation stone was laid on the 3rd February 1928 with the official opening held on the 10th October 1928. Extensions were made to the hall to commemorate those who served in World War Two, and today it is occupied as the RSL Club (Return Services League). The building was originally occupied by the Council Chambers until 1949.
A leaden box was placed in the cavity of the foundation stone with documents containing the names of those who had been connected with the erection of the hall and the names of those who had enlisted. A statement was also placed in the box containing the words: - "this building was erected by public subscription, with £500 added by the Oberon Shire Council, as a Soldiers' Memorial and Shire Chambers in remembrance of those who served in the Great War 1914-1918. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs. B. A. Rogers (whose son was one of the fallen) on 3rd February, 1928."
