The monument commemorates merchant seamen who have died in service or have been killed in action in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. The plaque located on the back of the memorial was erected by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) and unveiled on the 16th August 1950.

On Wednesday at 12.15 p.m. the chairman of directors of the B.H.P. Co. Ltd. (Mr. Essington Lewis) will unveil a plaque in memory of men who lost their lives in ships owned by the company during the Second World War. The plaque will be in front of the shipping office at the Newcastle Steel Works Wharf. This will be the second plaque at the Steel Works commemorating men who had been employed by the company and who were killed during the war. The other, unveiled some time ago by the State Governor (Lieut-General Sir John Northcott), was in memory of men who lost their lives in the fighting forces.
