The monument commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One.

ANZAC Day was celebrated at Cargelligo with the unveiling of the Soldiers Memorial Monument. The scene was marked by a brilliant display of bunting, including the colours of the Y.M.C.A. and Red Cross, the latter being represented by the local school children.

A procession of girls and boys, headed by two standard bearers, flying the Red Cross, appeared on the scene, forming a pretty and pleasing spectacle. The president of the Lachlan Shire Council, Cr. Dawson, performed the unveiling ceremony, during which wreaths and flowers were placed around the monument.
