Howlong War MemorialPrint Page
The monument commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
It was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One. The names of those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two were added at a later date.
The monument was re-dedicated in 2007 to all those who serve and have served in the Armed Forces of Australia.
On ANZAC Day the soldiers' memorial was unveiled at Howlong. This monument is built of Harcourt granite on a basalt foundation. Numerous wreaths were placed on the monument. The inscription on the memorial reads: — "Erected by the residents of Howlong and district in honor of those who served, and in loving memory of those who fell in the Great War, 1914-18. Bromfield, W. H. ; Hartley, D. ; Koehn. F. W. ; Kruse, W. ; Leseberg, J.A. ; Murdoch, W. R. ; Proctor, W. ; Sheehan, J. ; Wilkinson, W." These are the men who fell, a separate honor roll having been already unveiled to those who served. The monument and fence are to cost approximately £360. The ladies of Howlong raised £100 by means of a bazaar and sale of work, and £93 was handed over by the Red Cross ladies at Howlong.
