The cenotaph was originally erected to commemorate those from the District who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. The names of those died in service or were killed in action in World War Two were added at a later date.

Additional plaques have been placed to commemorate all conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

The Gunnedah Fallen Soldiers Memorial was unveiled by Mr. C.L.A. Abbott M.P on Monday last. The memorial, which cost £600, obtained by direct subscriptions, has been erected in a central position in Conadilly-street, between the Post Office and Public School. There are 51 names on the Roll of Honour.
