The monument was originally erected to commemorate those from Grenfell who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two.  A plaque was added to the memorial to commemorate those who served in Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam.

It is a polished grey granite monolith, and on its top is a metal bowl containing a plastic representation of a flame.

A plaque with the names of 41 local servicemen and women who received decorations from the First World War to Korea was placed on the memorial in 2011.
