Lest We Forget
While we remember with great respect and humility the sacrifices made by servicemen and women in war, we also pay homage to those who remained at home to keep the families together, the businesses functioning and the farms producing as best as they could.
Families, friends and the Plantagenet community suffered greatly through lives lost, but they also showed great courage, resilience and ingenuity in maintaing normalcy in everyday life.
Many groups, including schoolchildren worked tirelessly to raise funds to provide comfort to the troops, putting together parcels of knitted items, bandages, small gifts and letters to boost morale.
The Red Cross, CWA, Voluntary Aid Detachment, Land Girls amd many other groups were formed, often spearheaded by committed women who stepped outside the home to lead and manage activities. The Voluntary Defence Corps trained to defend our southern shore.
Men and women were manpowered into extra work for the war effort.
All played an important role on the home front, for which we remember them.
