RAAF P-3 Orion
Hamilton Standard 54H60-77 Propeller
Dedicated to the men and women of 92 Wing (10 Squadron, 11 Squadron, 292 Squadron and 492 Squadron), RAAF Base Edinburgh and the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft.
The P-3 Orion commenced flying from RAAF Base Edinburgh in 1968, and provide over 50 years of continuous service to Australia, in the roles of land and maritime surveillance, anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare naval fleet support, and search and rescue operations.
Over its service life, the P-3 Orion was involved in many Defence operations including Gateway, Solania, Slipper, Catalyst, Resolute, Argos, Warden, Southern Indian Ocean.
92 Wing and the P-3 Orion ceased 10 years of continuous operational service in the Middle East in 2012, after completing 2400 missions with more than 3500 personnel deployed (including many from the City of Salisbury), for which 92 Wing was awarded a Meritorious Unit Citation.
92 Wing and the P-3 Orion were also involved in many search and rescue operations, including the rescue of round-the-world yacht racers in 1995 and 1997, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race rescues on 1998 and was the primary Australia aircraft used in the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 in 2014.
