The trees commemorate those who served in World War One and World War Two.

Goodwood Oval, previously known as Goodwood Recreation Ground, has had many separate tree-plantings over the years to commemorate soldiers who served in World War One and World War Two. On different occasions, trees were planted by local school children, Druids, and the Forestville Hockey Club.  Many of the trees and their associated plaques have disappeared with the passage of time.

The first planting of memorial trees occurred on Friday 1 August 1919, when children from Goodwood Primary School planted trees around the Goodwood Recreation Ground to commemorate the soldiers from the school who served in World War One.

The scholars of the Goodwood Public School celebrated Arbor Day on August 1, when trees were planted around the Goodwood District Recreation Ground in memory of the soldiers from the school. The proceedings were arranged in conjunction with the Goodwood School Committee and the Unley City Council. After saluting of the flag by the children the head master (Mr. Sutton) introduced the visitors and explained to the children the importance attached to Arbor Day, and called on Mr. W. G. Trotter (chairman of the school committee) to take charge of the proceedings. Short speeches were delivered by Mr. Trotter, the Mayor of Unley (Mr. Langham). Hon. F. S. Wallis, M.L.C; and Mr. Smeaton, M.P. The opportunity was taken to present the medals won on the previous Saturday at the children's sports held on Peace Day.

A move was then made for the treeplanting in the following order:— On the west side of the entrance by the Mayor of Unley, Hon. F. S. Wallis, Mr. T. H. Smeaton, Ald. T. Yelland, and Mr. W. G. Trotter (as chairman of G.S.C.), Mrs W. Steed (as hon. secretary of G.S.C.), Mrs. E. R. Lloyd (as hon. treasurer of. G.&.C.), Mr. C. H. Greenham (as hon. secretary of Grounds association), Cr. B. Croft, Rev. A. C. Hill (of G.&.C.), Mrs. B. Croft, and Mr. E. J. Ashton (of G.S.C.). On the east side of the entrance by Mr. R. Sutton (head master). Ald. W. J. Bill,  Ald. C. Williams, Hon. H. Tassie, M.L.C, C. E. Vardon, M.P., Cr. J. T. Hobbs, W.Hill jun., and Cr. G.W. Illingworth.
