Crystal Brook & Districts War MemorialPrint Page
The monument commemorates those from Crystal Brook and Districts who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
A new war memorial has taken pride of place in Crystal Brook's Adelaide Square, honouring all conflicts in the past, present and future. The town's tribute was unveiled on Sunday by His Excellency, Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia, as part of the RSL sub-branch's centenary.
Later in Sunday's ceremony, master-of-ceremonies Ivan Venning told of the group's turn-around in fortunes thanks to the community's support. In 2011, the local sub-branch was on the brink of folding and the Brandis Street building was in a state of disrepair. By 2012, the town rallied around the group and Mr Venning made particular mention of the school being a part of their successful revival.
Mr Van Le said the memorial's unveiling was an important event and congratulated the sub-branch on its centenary. "I'm honoured to be in the presence of many veterans who served in several conflicts," he told the gathering. "I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the veterans who are or have been members of Crystal Brook RSL, whether you served overseas or on the ground here in Australia or as Reserves, I honour your service to our country.
"Crystal Brook has a strong history of service to our nation. Over 100 men from the district served in the First World War, and more than 200 in the Second World War. The district is well-represented in the most recent conflicts including in Vietnam, East Timor and Iraq."
In a poignant touch to the occasion, Sullivan's great-granddaughter, Tahnee Alexander, placed an image of the VC recipient at the base of the memorial.
