Maccabean Memorial ParkPrint Page
The park commemorates those Western Australian members of the Jewish faith who have died in service or were killed in action the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
Whatever was done to perpetuate the memory of the fallen, it "should express the ideals and hopes of those men for the betterment of all men and women." The Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth (Dr. I. Brodie) said this when officially opening the Maccabean League's memorial park to fallen Jewish servicemen near the Mt. Yokine golf links at Tuart Hill yesterday. Official visitors included the Attorney-General (Mr. Abbott) and the chairman of the Perth Road Board (Mr. W. F. S. Bardon).
Explaining the purpose of the memorial, the president of the Maccabean League (Mr. G. Bloomfield) said that 21 acres had been purchased, of which seven acres had since been cleared, providing for playing fields, an auditorium and a car parking area. Eventually there would be a pavilion with dressing rooms, a public hall, a dining room and many other amenities. It would be of great benefit to all residents of the district.
The president of the Perth Hebrew Congregation (Mr. A. Troy) made a presentation to Dr. and Mrs. Brodie on behalf of Perth Jews. In a farewell message, Dr.Brodie, who will leave for Britain today, expressed the hope that "all denominations in this great land" would have happiness and lasting peace.
