The Avenue of Honour commemorates those from the district who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. The Avenue uses indigenous tree species and is at the site of a former World War Two military hospital. 

An Avenue of honour planted in Wadmore Park more than 70 years ago will be recreated to commemorate soldiers from the Campbelltown area. Campbelltown councillors voted at last week’s meeting in favour of spend $10,000 on a memorial plaque, history board, landscaping and an avenue of native trees at the site of a former World War II military hospital in the Athelstone park. Campbelltown Mayor Simon Brewer said the original 45 Chinese elms that lined the road to the hospital had died of natural causes over the past 10 to 15 years.

Council at its meeting on 4 February 2014 endorsed the concept of an Avenue of Honour at Wadmore Park/Pulyonna Wirra, Athelstone and the project was subsequently approved as part of the 2014/15 Annual Business Plan and Budget. Many Campbelltown residents may be unaware of the rich military history at Wadmore Park/Pulyonna Wirra, Athelstone.

When World War II began in the late 1930’s the land was used as a training ground by a wide range of rifle clubs and military units. In 1942, the north western corner of the site became a military hospital known as 123 Australian Special Hospital. During this time, quite a significant garden was established by staff and patients at the site, including a rockery, fish ponds and an avenue of Chinese Elms.

In order to honour those from the community who were enlisted and served in war, Council has worked with Campbelltown Landcare and Campbelltown Historical Society to develop an Avenue of Honour using Indigenous tree species along the original access road from Addison Avenue to the hospital site.

The Avenue was officially opened on Sunday 13 September 2015 by Deputy Mayor Marijka Ryan.
